Academic Excellence Fee Hardship Waiver
The Louisiana Legislature authorized the Board of Regents and the University of Louisiana System Board of Supervisors to assess a $10 per credit hour up to $120 per semester Academic Excellence Fee and a 4% operational fee. It is important for you to know that funds generated through this fee remain on campus for improved educational services. The Legislature has directed and the University of Louisiana at Monroe has made provisions for students with demonstrated hardships brought about as a result of this fee increase. (This increase is not included in the TOPS scholarship.) In the event you are unable to pay this increase, please contact the Financial Aid Office at (318) 342-5320 as soon as possible to discuss your circumstances. The Application for the Academic Excellence/Operational Fee Hardship Waiver is available in the Financial Aid Office, Administration Building 1-123.
CRITERIA FOR DETERMINING HARDSHIP WAIVER:
- Louisiana resident status
- Full time student
- Continuing academic eligibility for financial aid
ELIGIBILITY IS DETERMINED BY:
- Eligibility for Pell Grant as determined by the Department of Education (completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid [FAFSA])
- Prior application for all state, federal, and institutional aid for which the student may be eligible
- The cost of tuition, fees, and books, as defined by the cost of attendance, must be greater than the amount available from subsidized loans plus all other types of financial assistance and scholarships
SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES CONSIDERED FOR THE WAIVER:
- Loss of parent*
- Loss of parental income (due to loss of job or divorce or separation)*
- Excessive medical expenses*
*Documentation is required from the student.
- The waiver cannot be used in connection with other scholarships that exempt the same fees. The amount of the Operational Fee Waiver will be no greater than the 4% per session increase and $120 for the Academic Excellence Fee Waiver.
- Special condition will be considered after August 1 for financial aid based on change in financial status (per student’s request).
Students must submit their application waiver to the Financial Aid Office by the close of business one week before the regular payment deadline of registration of the semester that the student is currently enrolled. The waiver does not cover the Summer Term.
