Acquiring Work-Study Jobs

Federal Work Study - 04

The University of Louisiana at Monroe provides employment opportunities through which students can earn money to cover a portion of their educational and living expenses.  Jobs are available to both undergraduate and graduate students.  These positions provide students with valuable employment experience and can provide opportunities to perform community service.

If you are awarded a Campus Work-Study position, you will be sent a letter notifying you of the job placement process and when to come by the Financial Aid Office to pick up your Work Study Authorization Form.  It is important for you to follow the instructions stated in this letter.

If you are not awarded a Campus Work-Study position, you will come by the Financial Aid Office to complete a Change Request Form.  Your form will be kept for reference should any work-study funds or positions become available.

Work Study Budgets

When you are awarded a Campus-Work Study position, you will be given a budget for each semester.  This is the maximum amount which you may earn.  You should be aware that this budget may affect other aid you receive, primarily your student loan amounts.  Likewise, if you receive additional scholarships, etc., your work-study budget may be decreased.  In the event that your work-study budget is changed, both you and your supervisor will be contacted.

Work-Study positions are hourly-wage jobs in which you work for an employer according to a mutually agreed-upon schedule and are paid by check on a monthly basis.  The maximum number of hours you may work is twenty (20) hours per week.  Work-Study awards are not grants automatically applied towards your tuition bill, nor is the amount of the award guaranteed.  An award simply authorizes you to participate in the program and sets a limit as to the amount of income you can earn during the academic year.  It is your responsibility to work enough hours to reach the maximum budget allowance and to use the money wisely throughout the year to meet necessary college costs.

Acquiring Work-Study Jobs

The Financial Aid Office initially awards Work-Study to those qualified students who requested work-study on their FAFSA application and had applied by the priority deadline date of April 1. Note: Even if you worked in a work-study position the previous year, this does not guarantee you will be working in the same position for the next school year.  You must file by the priority deadline date to be considered for your work-study position. The work-study award will appear on your award notice.  If you accept your work-study award, you will be notified before the start of the upcoming semester to come by the Financial Aid Office and pick-up your Work Authorization Form.  This form must be signed by your supervisor and returned to the Financial Aid Office BEFORE you begin work. Please note that because campus departments are business offices, you should use proper business etiquette when seeking a position.

At the beginning of each semester, the Financial Aid Office will post campus work-study openings for new campus job applicants on this site. These jobs are filled on a first-come first-served basis.  You must have a Work Study authorization form, which is obtained from the Financial Aid Office,  BEFORE you visit any of the campus departments with job openings.  Again, business etiquette is strongly encouraged.
